How Studying Works in Albion Online

Studying turns finished items into crafting fame. You place an item in the Study tab of a crafting station, pay the station's fee, and the item is destroyed. In return, the Destiny Board nodes that craft that item receive at least 275% of its crafting fame, almost three times what crafting it gave.

You can study items you bought, so studying lets you level a crafting specialization with silver instead of materials and crafting time. This guide covers how much fame an item gives, what multiplies it, what studying costs, and which items can be studied. Every example below was checked against the Study tab in game.

The study fame formula

Study fame per item = Crafting fame × Artifact factor × 2.75 × Daily bonus × Focus × Premium
Factor Value When it applies
Crafting fame Fame of the item's materials Always (see the next section)
Artifact factor × 1.1 to × 1.4 Artifact items; the factor depends on the item
Study factor × 2.75 Always; the "275% Crafting Fame" yield in the Study tab
Daily Production Bonus × 1.10 or × 1.20 Only when today's bonus is for the item's crafting category
Focus × 1.59 When you study with Focus
Premium × 1.5 While Premium is active

Every bonus multiplies the others. None of them is added to the 275%.

City production bonuses do not apply to studying. They were removed in September 2022 (Into the Fray, Patch 6), when the base study factor went from 2 to 2.75. Where you study does not change the fame you get; only the station's fee differs.

How the bonuses stack

The Study tab shows the combined multiplier as Total. These are the totals the game shows:

Bonuses Calculation Total in the Study tab
None 275% 275%
Premium 275% × 1.5 413%
Premium and a 10% Daily Production Bonus 275% × 1.5 × 1.1 454%
Premium and Focus 275% × 1.5 × 1.59 656%
Premium, a 10% Daily Production Bonus and Focus 275% × 1.5 × 1.1 × 1.59 721%

With the rarer 20% Daily Production Bonus, Premium and Focus, the total reaches 275% × 1.5 × 1.2 × 1.59 = 787%.

Where crafting fame comes from

An item's crafting fame is the fame of the refined materials in its recipe. Each material is worth:

Tier .0 .1 .2 .3 .4
T4 22.5 45 90 180 360
T5 90 180 360 720 1,440
T6 270 540 1,080 2,160 4,320
T7 645 1,290 2,580 5,160 10,320
T8 1,395 2,790 5,580 11,160 22,320

Fame per metal bar, plank, cloth or leather. Each enchantment level doubles it, so a T4.4 item carries 16 times the fame of the same item at T4.0, and a T8.0 item carries 62 times the fame of T4.0.

Item Recipe Crafting fame
Adept's Axe (T4.0 tool) 6 Planks, 2 Metal Bars 8 × 22.5 = 180
Adept's Mace (T4.0) 16 Metal Bars, 8 Cloth 24 × 22.5 = 540
Adept's Bedrock Mace (T4.0) 16 Metal Bars, 8 Cloth, 1 artifact 540 × 1.1 = 594
Expert's Cape (T5.0) 4 Cloth, 4 Leather 8 × 90 = 720
Expert's Bag (T5.0) 8 Cloth, 8 Leather 16 × 90 = 1,440

The artifact in an artifact recipe adds no fame of its own. The item's artifact factor raises its crafting fame instead: 1.1 for the Bedrock Mace.

Item quality is not part of the formula. A Normal item studies for the same fame as an Excellent one, so the cheapest quality is the one to buy.

Example: Adept's Bedrock Mace with every bonus

Study tab with an Adept's Bedrock Mace: 275% yield, Daily Events, Premium and Focus bonuses, 721% total, +4k fame to Mace Crafter and to Bedrock Mace Crafting Specialist, Study Cost 216, Focus 1,262

This Bedrock Mace was studied with Premium, Focus and a 10% Daily Production Bonus for maces. Its crafting fame is 594, and each bonus is applied on top of the ones before it:

Base study fame 594 × 2.75 = 1,633.50
Daily bonus +10% of 1,633.50 = 163.35 → 1,796.85
Premium +50% of 1,796.85 = 898.43 → 2,695.28
Focus +59% of 2,695.28 = 1,590.21 → 4,285.49

The Study tab shows the same result as +4k (+163, +898, +2k): the total fame, then the share added by the Daily Events, Premium and Focus bonuses. The shares in brackets are shown to the fame point, which makes them the easiest way to check a calculation in game.

The 721% Total does not include the artifact factor, because that factor is part of the item's crafting fame.

Which nodes get the fame

Every node listed in the Study tab receives the full amount. This one mace gave 4,285 fame to Mace Crafter and another 4,285 to Bedrock Mace Crafting Specialist.

A node that is already level 100 is no longer listed and gains nothing. In the cape example below, Cape Tailor is already level 100, so only Cape Tailoring Specialist appears.

Fame also carries over between levels. If a study gives more fame than the current level needs, the rest counts toward the next level.

Masteries need much less fame than specializations, so the mastery usually reaches level 100 long before the specialization does. Cape Tailor needs 3.2 million fame from level 0 to 100, while Cape Tailoring Specialist needs 19.3 million.

Each node's next-level requirement also says which items count, for example "Craft Adept's Cape or better".

Example: Cape Tailoring Specialist from 95 to 96

Cape Tailoring Specialist at level 95 of 100 with 0 of 594k fame toward level 96, requirement Craft Adept's Cape or better, and +370 Focus Cost Efficiency per level

Level 96 of Cape Tailoring Specialist needs 594,030 fame (shown as 594k). An Expert's Cape has 720 crafting fame.

Study tab with an Expert's Cape: 275% yield, Premium and Focus bonuses, 656% total, +5k fame to Cape Tailoring Specialist, Study Cost 172 at 599 per 100 nutrition, Focus 53
With Premium: 720 × 2.75 × 1.5 = 2,970 fame per cape
With Premium and Focus: 720 × 2.75 × 1.5 × 1.59 = 4,722.3 fame per cape
Premium Premium and Focus
Fame per Expert's Cape 2,970 4,722.3
Capes for 594,030 fame 201 (200.01 rounded up) 126 (125.79 rounded up)
Focus spent (53 per cape) 0 6,678
Station fees at 599 per 100 nutrition about 34,675 silver about 21,737 silver

Studying with Focus saves 75 capes for this level. Add the price you pay for the capes to get the full cost.

The Focus cost of studying

Studying an item with Focus costs the same Focus as crafting one of that item, reduced by your Focus Cost Efficiency for it:

Focus per item = Base Focus cost × 0.5^(Efficiency / 10,000)

The Expert's Cape has a base Focus cost of 750. The player in the example has:

Cape Tailor 100 × 30 per level = 3,000
Cape Tailoring Specialist 95 × 370 per level = 35,150
Total efficiency = 38,150

Focus per cape = 750 × 0.5^3.815 = 53.29, shown as 53

A specialization adds 280 efficiency per level to its own item (370 for capes and 340 for bags). The mastery and the other specializations of the same family add 30 per level, except artifact specializations such as Avalonian, Keeper, Hellgate, Morgana and Undead, which add 15 or less. How Crafting Specialization Reduces Focus Costs explains this in detail.

When is Focus worth it?

Focus adds 59% to the fame you already get, so the fame you gain per point of Focus depends on how cheap the item's Focus cost is for you:

Item Extra fame from Focus Focus per item Fame per Focus point
Expert's Cape, Cape Tailoring Specialist 95 1,752 53 about 33
Adept's Bedrock Mace, low specialization 1,590 1,262 about 1.3

Spend Focus on items you are highly specialized in. For items with a high Focus cost at your levels, studying without Focus and keeping the Focus for crafting or refining is usually better.

The silver fee

Each studied item pays the station's usage fee for the item's nutrition, exactly as crafting it would:

Fee per item = Item Value × 0.1125 × Station fee per 100 nutrition / 100
Item Item Value Station fee Calculated fee Study Cost in game
Adept's Axe 128 599 86.26 86
Adept's Mace 384 400 172.80 172
Adept's Bedrock Mace 480 (384 + 96 for the artifact) 400 216.00 216
Expert's Cape 256 599 172.51 172
Adept's Bow of Badon 1,408 (512 + 896 for the artifact) 999 1,582.42 1,582
  • The game rounds the Study Cost down to whole silver.
  • An artifact's Item Value counts toward the fee, so artifact items cost more to study at the same station.
  • Premium, Focus and the Daily Production Bonus do not change the fee. The Bedrock Mace cost 216 silver with and without Focus.
  • Market prices are not part of the fee; it only depends on Item Value and the station's rate.

How Crafting Station Fees Are Calculated covers Item Value and nutrition in more detail.

What can be studied

You study an item at a station that crafts it. Refining stations and a few others do not allow studying:

Station Studying What you can study there
Warrior's Forge Yes Swords, axes, maces, hammers, war gloves, crossbows, plate armor, warrior off-hands
Hunter's Lodge Yes Bows, spears, daggers, quarterstaffs, nature and shapeshifter staffs, leather armor, hunter off-hands
Mage's Tower Yes Fire, frost, arcane, holy and cursed staffs, cloth armor, mage off-hands
Toolmaker Yes Tools, gathering gear, bags, capes
Cook Yes Food
Alchemist's Lab Yes Potions
Smelter, Lumbermill, Stonemason, Tanner, Weaver No Refined materials cannot be studied
Butcher No Meat cannot be studied
Mill No Flour and butter cannot be studied
Saddler No Mounts cannot be studied

Refining specializations therefore cannot be levelled by studying.

The game also refuses to study an item when:

  • the item is not at full durability,
  • you have not unlocked crafting that item, or
  • none of your Destiny Board nodes would gain fame from it, for example because they are all level 100 or the item's tier is too low for their next level.

Tips for studying efficiently

  • Compare silver per fame, not price. Divide each item's price plus the station fee by the fame it gives. A cheap low-tier item often costs more per fame than an expensive higher-tier or enchanted one.
  • Buy the cheapest quality. Quality does not change study fame.
  • Keep Premium active and watch for a Daily Production Bonus on your item's category. The party hat icon in the Albion Free Market top bar shows today's bonuses.
  • Use Focus where your Focus cost is low, usually on the items of your highest specialization.
  • Craft, then study. Crafting an item gives its crafting fame once, and studying the finished item gives at least 275% more for the same materials.

Plan your levels with the Study Calculator

The Study Calculator does all of these calculations for you. Pick the crafting, cooking or alchemy specialization you want to level and your current level, then set how you level: the routes you use (buy and study, craft and study, or craft and sell on the Black Market, which is off to start), the Daily Production Bonus, Focus, Quick Learn, Premium and your station fee.

Reach level shows the cheapest plan to your target level: the item, how many to buy or craft, the route and the total silver, with the other routes under it and every item ranked by silver per fame, station fee and Focus included. Reach a focus cost finds the cheapest mix of levels across the specialization, its sister specializations and the mastery to bring your item's Focus cost down to a target, because a few cheap levels in a sister specialization often beat the last levels of the one you craft with.
